Two Mexican nationals, Manuel Gomez-Sanchez, 39, and David Alejandro Sandoval Canales, 41, were caught with a massive haul of methamphetamine and illegal firearms on a California highway. The bust happened on March 24, 2026, when the duo was stopped for traffic violations on U.S. Interstate-5 in Kings County. A subsequent search of their vehicle yielded 10 pounds of methamphetamine, packaged into single-pounds increments, a digital scale, ammunition, and two notebooks containing information consistent with narcotic sales and purchases.
The search also turned up a loaded Berretta semiautomatic handgun and an AR-15 rifle, indicating that the pair was heavily armed and potentially prepared for a violent confrontation. The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the California Highway Patrol, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Initiative, and the High Impact Investigation Team.
Gomez-Sanchez and Sandoval are now facing serious charges, including possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. If convicted, they could face a minimum of 10 years in prison, with a maximum sentence of life behind bars, and a fine of up to $10 million.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating drug trafficking and other crimes. As the investigation continues, the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
