Darlene Moreno, a 44-year-old California woman, is accused of distributing methamphetamine that resulted in the fatal overdose of a 48-year-old Unalaska fishing industry worker. The incident occurred between January 21 and February 2, 2025, when Moreno allegedly shipped a package containing meth from California to Unalaska. The victim picked up the package on January 31 and fatally overdosed two days later. An investigation by the Homeland Security Task Force led to Moreno’s arrest in Santa Barbara, California.
According to court documents, lab results confirmed the substance found on the victim was 98% pure methamphetamine, and the State of Alaska medical examiner ruled the victim’s cause of death as methamphetamine intoxication. Investigators also found social media conversations between the victim and Moreno discussing the purchase of methamphetamine.
Moreno is charged with one count of distribution of methamphetamine resulting in death and one count of use of a communication facility in committing, causing and facilitating the commission of a drug trafficking felony. She faces between 20 years to life in prison if convicted.
The case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Alaska, and the Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS) Northwest Field Office. Moreno is scheduled to make her initial court appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
