John Mead Ogburn, Meth & Fentanyl Trafficking, Montana 2024

GREAT FALLS, MT – John Mead Ogburn, 45, of Great Falls, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to running a significant methamphetamine and fentanyl operation in the city. The bust, a collaborative effort by multiple federal and local agencies, uncovered a sophisticated drug distribution network and a shocking method of concealment.

Ogburn pleaded guilty June 20th to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl. According to court documents, law enforcement began investigating Ogburn in September 2023, quickly identifying him as a key source for both drugs within the Great Falls community. The investigation rapidly escalated when a UPS package containing 1,757 fentanyl pills was intercepted in November 2023, destined for an address linked to an individual who immediately identified Ogburn as the orchestrator of the shipment.

The net tightened in December when a search of another individual’s residence yielded approximately one pound of methamphetamine and 55 grams of fentanyl powder. Crucially, officers observed Ogburn at the residence both before and after the raid. The resident later confessed that the drugs were intended for Ogburn, solidifying the case against him. But the most brazen element of the operation came to light on February 9th.

During an interdiction stop on Interstate 90 involving two vehicles associated with Ogburn – an Acura and a Dodge truck – officers discovered a staggering two pounds of methamphetamine meticulously wired to the undercarriage of the truck. In a recorded jail call, Ogburn himself admitted responsibility for concealing the drugs in this manner, effectively sealing his fate. U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich’s office is prosecuting the case.

Ogburn now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years to life in prison, alongside a potential $10 million fine and at least five years of supervised release. A plea agreement suggests a sentencing range of 12 years and seven months to 15 years and eight months. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris has scheduled sentencing for October 24th, and Ogburn remains detained pending further proceedings.

This takedown is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and enhancing community safety. The investigation was a joint effort by the FBI, Russell Country Drug Task Force, Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Great Falls Police Department, Cascade County Sheriff’s Office, and Montana Highway Patrol.
