Christopher William Stevens, Methamphetamine Conspiracy, South Carolina 2023

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Christopher William Stevens, 35, of Lancaster, is headed for a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 135 months – more than 11 years – in federal prison for a brazen drug conspiracy. Stevens was convicted of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and a quantity of fentanyl, a deadly combination fueling the opioid crisis in South Carolina and beyond.

The investigation, a joint effort between the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), revealed a systematic operation distributing poison throughout the region. Law enforcement wasn’t relying on hearsay; they had Stevens dead to rights. Between 2021 and 2022, multiple traffic stops yielded a veritable pharmacy of illicit substances. Officers found suboxone, gabapentin, marijuana, heroin, fentanyl, and – of course – methamphetamine in vehicles Stevens either drove or rode in.

But the haul didn’t stop at drugs. These weren’t casual users being pulled over. The traffic stops also revealed the tools of the trade: digital scales for weighing the product, glass pipes for consumption, and, chillingly, firearms – suggesting a willingness to protect the operation with violence. On at least two occasions in 2021, undercover law enforcement officers directly purchased fentanyl from Stevens, solidifying the case against him.

United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis delivered the sentence, a clear message that drug trafficking won’t be tolerated in the district. The 135-month prison term is followed by a four-year term of court-ordered supervision, but don’t be fooled – there’s no parole in the federal system. Stevens will serve nearly his entire sentence.

This wasn’t a victimless crime. The ripple effects of Stevens’ operation are felt by families torn apart by addiction, and communities plagued by rising crime rates. HSI and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office deserve credit for dismantling this operation and bringing a dangerous criminal to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney William K. Witherspoon skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring a conviction and a substantial sentence.

The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal crime across the nation, exposing the underbelly of society and holding those responsible accountable. This case serves as a stark reminder that the drug trade is a dangerous game, and those who play it will face the full force of the law.
