Mark Anthony Cavello, a 52-year-old Texas man, was a key player in a massive methamphetamine distribution ring that spanned over a decade, supplying large quantities of the highly addictive drug to Eastern North Carolina. Cavello’s operation, which involved mailing packages, wire transfers, and phone communication, was finally dismantled after a thorough investigation by federal law enforcement. The probe, which began in March 2021, revealed that Cavello’s drug trafficking organization (DTO) was responsible for peddling meth, as well as other illicit substances like marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, to the region.
Cavello’s modus operandi was to use various tactics to evade detection, including utilizing multiple homes to conceal his locations, employing a post office box to handle money, and frequently changing phone numbers. He also used his legitimate construction business and a bank account under a relative’s name to launder his ill-gotten gains. The DTO relied heavily on family members and drug runners to deliver drugs and collect cash, making it a complex web of illicit activity.
Between September 2021 and March 2022, the ATF made three controlled drug purchases from Cavello, totaling approximately 11 pounds of highly potent meth. The drugs were mailed from Texas to Eastern North Carolina, with Cavello receiving payment in the mail. This brazen operation ultimately led to Cavello’s downfall, as he pleaded guilty on May 30, 2024, to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of meth, distribution of more than 50 grams of meth, and money laundering.
Cavello’s sentence of 18 years in federal prison serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such illicit activities. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle noted that the sentence is a testament to the collaborative efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement to rid the community of the ‘poison’ that Cavello peddled. The residents of Eastern North Carolina can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that a major supplier of meth has been taken off the streets.
