Courtney Richmond, a 49-year-old Sioux Falls man, was involved in a large-scale methamphetamine distribution operation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. From late 2022 to 2023, investigators with Homeland Security Investigations and the DEA looked into Richmond’s activities, discovering that he was sourcing meth to at least one other person who was then reselling it to others. The investigation led to the seizure of approximately 300 grams of methamphetamine and the discovery of Richmond’s involvement in the drug trade. On December 14, 2023, investigators stopped Richmond in a vehicle and found approximately 75 grams of methamphetamine and a loaded pistol. A subsequent search of his home revealed an additional 216 grams of methamphetamine and another loaded firearm.
Richmond’s crimes were committed despite having four prior felony convictions from the state of Minnesota, which prohibited him from possessing firearms. The investigation and trial culminated in a 4-day jury trial in federal district court in Sioux Falls, resulting in a guilty verdict on April 10, 2026.
On July 23, 2026, U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Richmond to 15 years and eight months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $300 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
