Meth Kingpin Wise Gets 121 Months for Arming His Habit
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In a brazen display of disregard for the law, 45-year-old John Allen Wise of Cashiers, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 121 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release for distributing methamphetamine and illegally possessing firearms. Wise’s egregious crimes took place while he was on court-ordered supervised release after serving a term of imprisonment on a prior federal drug conviction.
According to court documents, law enforcement with the U.S. Probation Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Wise’s residence on August 5, 2022, to arrest him on a supervised release violation warrant and to conduct a planned search. What they found was a small bag containing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia on Wise’s front porch. The search of the residence yielded even more incriminating evidence, including fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine, digital scales and items consistent with drug distribution, a loaded semiautomatic pistol, and multiple rounds of ammunition.
Wise’s criminal conviction prohibits him from possessing firearms and ammunition, making his actions nothing short of reckless and irresponsible. His decision to arm himself with a loaded pistol while distributing methamphetamine is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who refuse to comply with the law.
On April 24, 2023, Wise pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The guilty plea marked a significant milestone in the case, but it did little to mitigate the severity of Wise’s crimes.
U.S. Attorney Dena J. King praised the efforts of the DEA and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the case, stating, “I would like to thank the DEA and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for their tireless efforts in bringing this case to justice.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Hess of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Asheville prosecuted the case.
Wise is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility. His sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in narcotics distribution and firearm offenses, particularly for individuals who have previously been convicted of similar crimes.
As this case demonstrates, law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle the networks of individuals who perpetuate these crimes and bring them to justice.
