CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Adolfo Tovar, 36, of Corpus Christi is headed for a long stay in federal prison after being sentenced for a potent cocktail of offenses: being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced the sentencing, a result of a case that began with a simple, concerned citizen’s call.
The trouble began late on the evening of April 10, 2021, when a good Samaritan reported a vehicle parked haphazardly at a local gas station. The driver, slumped over and seemingly unconscious, raised immediate red flags. Authorities arrived to find Tovar unresponsive behind the wheel. A simple request for identification quickly spiraled into a full-blown narcotics investigation.
As Tovar complied with requests to exit the vehicle and produce ID, two blue baggies – the telltale sign of illicit drug packaging – tumbled to the ground. A subsequent search of Tovar’s SUV revealed a treasure trove of incriminating evidence: methamphetamine, drug scales, additional baggies, and, critically, a firearm stashed under the driver’s seat. For a convicted felon, that gun represented a world of trouble.
Tovar pleaded guilty on December 1, 2022, acknowledging his involvement in the illegal activities. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos didn’t mince words, delivering a harsh sentence of 200 months – over 16 years – in federal prison. The judge specifically cited Tovar’s extensive criminal history, including prior convictions for attempted robbery and second-degree robbery, as aggravating factors in the sentencing.
The sentence isn’t just about the drugs and the gun, it’s about a pattern of behavior. Tovar is a career offender, and this lengthy prison term reflects that reality. Following his incarceration, Tovar will also be subject to five years of supervised release. He remains in custody pending transfer to a yet-to-be-determined U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives spearheaded the investigation, receiving crucial support from the Corpus Christi Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joel Dunn successfully prosecuted the case, ensuring that Tovar faces significant consequences for his actions.
