A Houston man’s attempt to smuggle a massive haul of meth into the US has landed him a 30-year prison sentence. Yobany Vega, 25, tried to bring 40.5 kgs of 100% purity level methamphetamine into the country through Eagle Pass Camino Real Bridge 2 on December 6, 2024. The meth was hidden in 41 bundles inside a non-factory compartment in his vehicle. Vega was arrested on the spot and later pleaded guilty to all four counts of his indictment.
According to court documents, Customs and Border Protection Officers discovered the hidden compartment during a secondary inspection, revealing the large stash of meth. Vega’s indictment included conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to import methamphetamine, and importation of methamphetamine.
Vega’s case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph Duarte II and Nallely Duarte. U.S. District Judge Ernest Gonzalez presided over the case, which is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to combat transnational criminal organizations and protect communities from violent crime.
The 30-year sentence handed down to Vega reflects the severity of his crime and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to disrupt the flow of illicit drugs into the US. As part of Operation Take Back America, the Department of Justice is working to dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations and bring perpetrators of violent crime to justice.
