Jonathan Lloyd Erwin, a 38-year-old Billings man, was sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to traffic methamphetamine in Montana. Erwin’s wife tipped off the US Postal Service in February 2025, sparking an investigation that led to his downfall. On March 11, 2025, USPS officials intercepted a package containing 7.5 ounces of meth, which was intended for Erwin. The package was sent from a fake address, and agents replaced the meth with rock salt before delivering it to Erwin’s residence.
Erwin took the package into his garage, where authorities later found it hidden in the rafters during a search. His wife was present during the search and again stated that her husband was receiving drugs in the mail. A search of Erwin’s phone revealed messages discussing his meth purchases on the dark web, tracking packages, and selling the drugs.
Erwin pleaded guilty in February 2026 to one count of attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. U.S. District Judge William W. Mercer presided over the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Godfrey prosecuted. The United States Postal Inspection Service and the Eastern Montana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force conducted the investigation.
Erwin’s sentence includes four years of supervised release following his three-year prison term. The case highlights the importance of tips from the public in combating drug trafficking and the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing criminals to justice.
