BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Two women, Crystal Yvette Martinez, 25, and Tina Marie Trevino, 24, of Brownsville, have been ordered to federal prison for their roles in a massive methamphetamine distribution scheme.
According to the U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson, Martinez, 25, was convicted on November 19, 2014, after a two-day trial, while Trevino, 24, pleaded guilty on November 5, 2014.
In a shocking turn of events, the two women presented themselves at the B & M International Port of Entry in Brownsville on May 19, 2014, with a large quantity of Downy fabric softener bottles and Zote soaps, claiming they were for a laundromat business.
However, a canine alert led Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to conduct a secondary inspection, which revealed the presence of 115.94 kilograms or 255 pounds of methamphetamine in the Downy fabric softener bottles and Zote soaps.
Trevino admitted to being aware of the illegal cargo, while Martinez denied any knowledge. However, a CBP officer testified that the two women had conducted a dry-run the night before, attempting to gauge the inspectors’ reactions.
In a stunning admission, Trevino testified that both women were aware of the drugs and would share a $5,000 profit for the trip. The jury ultimately returned a guilty verdict against Martinez on all four counts, including conspiring to possess and distribute the methamphetamine.
U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle ordered Martinez to serve 240 months in federal prison, while Trevino will serve 75 months. Both women will also serve five years of supervised release following completion of their sentences.
