A notorious methamphetamine trafficker has been brought to justice in Florida. Eric Pedro Valdez, a 39-year-old Atlanta man, was yesterday sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute the highly addictive drug.
U.S. District Judge Paul Byron handed down the sentence in Ocala, Florida. Valdez had been found guilty by a federal jury on August 2, 2019, following a lengthy trial.
According to evidence presented during the trial, Valdez was part of a vast methamphetamine distribution conspiracy that spanned from November 2015 to May 2016. During this time, he conspired with others to distribute over 70 kilograms of the highly potent and addictive substance.
On March 23, 2016, Valdez took a bold step in the conspiracy by hand-delivering 4 kilograms of methamphetamine to two co-conspirators at a business in the Atlanta area. The intended destination of these drugs was Sumter County, where they would have likely contributed to the devastating effects of methamphetamine on local communities.
The case was a result of a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney William S. Hamilton led the prosecution, working tirelessly to bring Valdez to justice.
The 18-year sentence handed down to Valdez is a testament to the authorities’ commitment to combating the scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in the United States. It also serves as a warning to others involved in similar activities, that the law will not hesitate to bring them to justice.
