Bangor, Maine – A Mexican national has pleaded guilty to re-entering the United States illegally after being deported.
Bangor, Maine – Benigno Godinez-Cortez, 45, of Ahuacuotzingo, Guerrero, Mexico, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to unlawfully re-entering the United States after being deported.
According to court records, Godinez-Cortez entered the United States illegally from Canada by crossing a railroad trestle near Calais on July 10, 2018.
U.S. Border Patrol agents located the defendant shortly after he entered. Godinez-Cortez is a citizen of Mexico who had been deported after his arrest in 1994 on immigration charges and did not have immigration documents allowing him to enter.
U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank announced the guilty plea, stating that Godinez-Cortez faces up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
He will be sentenced after completion of a presentence report by the U.S. Probation Office. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The guilty plea is a significant step towards holding individuals accountable for violating U.S. immigration laws, said Frank.
