CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – In a stunning turn of events, Lucio Javier Escobedo Fernandez, a 28-year-old Mexican national, has admitted to a serious drug charge. United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II confirmed that Fernandez pleaded guilty today to one count of “Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine.”

Fernandez’s criminal activities spanned from March 2018 to August 2020, with operations primarily in Monongalia County and beyond. The admission comes as a significant blow to the local drug trade.

Escobedo Fernandez now faces a daunting sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine that could reach $1 million. The determination of his actual sentence will be influenced by the severity of his offenses and any prior criminal history he may have, according to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

Zelda E. Wesley, Assistant U.S. Attorney, is handling the case for the government. The Drug Enforcement Administration; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; and the Mon Metro Drug Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, have been instrumental in the investigation.

The proceedings were presided over by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi. This case has sent shockwaves through the community and serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in West Virginia.
