Mexican National Pleads Guilty to Social Security Number Scam
Narciso Ramos-Lopez, a 41-year-old Mexican national, has pleaded guilty to using a fake Social Security number to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), a federal judge announced today.
According to the indictment, Ramos-Lopez falsely represented that a Social Security number had been assigned to him by the Commissioner of Social Security in order to obtain the TWIC card on March 8, 2010.
The defendant’s actions were part of a larger scheme to deceive and obtain the TWIC card, which is required for workers in the transportation industry.
Ramos-Lopez faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $250,000, and three years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Louisiana State Police, with the assistance of U.S. Attorney Dana Boente’s office.
Narciso Ramos-Lopez’s sentencing is scheduled for October 16, 2013.
This case highlights the importance of verifying identity documents to prevent and detect similar schemes.
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a secure form of identification required for workers in the transportation industry, and its misuse can have serious consequences.
