Mexican National Sentenced for Selling Counterfeit ID

A 37-year-old Mexican national has been sentenced to prison time for his role in selling a counterfeit Social Security card to unsuspecting victims. Netzahualcoyotl Guinto-Ascenscio was handed down a six-month prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey in federal court in Louisiana.

Guinto-Ascenscio, a citizen of Mexico, was charged with unlawful transfer of a fraudulent identification document. As part of his sentence, he will also be placed on one year of supervised release following his imprisonment. If he violates any terms of supervised release, he risks an additional term of imprisonment.

According to court documents, Guinto-Ascenscio sold the counterfeit Social Security card to a victim on October 16, 2012. He admitted to the crime as part of a guilty plea, and two additional counts against him were dismissed as a result.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations, and prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.

Guinto-Ascenscio’s sentence comes as a warning to those who would seek to profit from selling counterfeit identification documents. Authorities stress that such crimes can have serious consequences for both the seller and the buyer.

Guinto-Ascenscio will be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for immigration processing upon his release from prison. His case is a reminder that counterfeit identification crimes will be taken seriously by law enforcement.
