ATLANTA – A fourth member of an infamous Mexican sex trafficking ring has been convicted. Severiano Martinez-Rojas, also known as ‘Negro’ and ‘Gato,’ entered a guilty plea in federal court to one count of sex trafficking for his role in exploiting three victims.
U.S. Attorney John A. Horn hailed the conviction as a triumph in anti-trafficking efforts. ‘Human trafficking remains a top priority, and we will continue to aggressively target these crimes,’ Horn stated.
The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division emphasized the impact of U.S.-Mexico cooperation. ‘Today’s conviction demonstrates our unwavering commitment to bringing human traffickers to justice,’ said Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler.
FBI Atlanta Field Office Special Agent in Charge David J. LeValley highlighted international partnerships. ‘The FBI is committed to identifying and apprehending those involved in transnational trafficking rings,’ LeValley noted.
ICE Homeland Security Investigations Atlanta’s Nick Annan echoed the sentiment, ‘Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and we will continue to ensure victims receive care while traffickers face justice.’
Martinez-Rojas and his co-defendants used false promises to lure women into the U.S. for forced prostitution, requiring them to have sex with multiple men nightly. He was indicted in 2013 but remained a fugitive until arrested in Mexico. Sentencing is pending.
