COLUMBUS, GA – Wilfred E. Wright, 34, of Columbus, Georgia, will spend the next six and a half years in federal prison after being sentenced for possession of child pornography. The sentence, handed down on April 11, 2017, by Chief United States District Court Judge Clay D. Land, reflects the gravity of the offenses and the damage inflicted on the young victims depicted in the illicit material.
According to court documents, Wright admitted to uploading images of child pornography to his Gmail account back on February 26, 2015. A subsequent investigation by the Columbus Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, utilizing search warrants for Wright’s electronic devices and online accounts, uncovered a disturbing cache of abuse. Authorities recovered 86 images and nine videos, all depicting the sexual exploitation of children.
The investigation revealed that a majority of the victims featured in these images were under the age of 12 at the time the abuse was captured. This detail underscores the particularly heinous nature of the crimes and the vulnerability of those exploited. Wright’s actions weren’t passive; he actively sought out and possessed this material, contributing to the demand that fuels this horrific industry.
Judge Land didn’t stop at imprisonment. In addition to the 78-month sentence, Wright will be subject to a lifetime of supervision as a registered sex offender upon his release from prison. Furthermore, the court ordered Wright to pay $12,500.00 in restitution to the victims depicted in the images and videos – a small measure of accountability for the lasting trauma he helped perpetuate.
United States Attorney G. F. “Pete” Peterman, III, issued a stark warning following the sentencing. “The sexual exploitation of the children used to make these videos and photos is an abomination. Those who support this exploitation by buying and possessing this type of material will be prosecuted by my office to the fullest extent of the law,” Peterman stated, making it clear that his office will relentlessly pursue those involved in the distribution and possession of child pornography.
Assistant United States Attorney C. Shanelle Booker successfully prosecuted the case for the United States.
