ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a chilling turn of events at the nation’s Northern Border, Jose Rodriguez Barajas, 40, has been exposed as a self-admitted alien smuggler. The Mexican citizen, an illegal resident himself, has now pled guilty to conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and three counts of alien smuggling.
Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia of the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector revealed Rodriguez Barajas’ guilt. The defendant confessed to smuggling three aliens across the border into the United States on March 14, 2025. He was caught after attempting to transport them further into the country.
Sarcone III issued a stern warning: “Rodriguez Barajas—despite being an illegal alien from Mexico—has shown utter disregard for our laws. His actions are a direct challenge to our nation’s immigration policies. This administration is committed to fully enforcing our immigration laws, and those who violate them will face the consequences.”
Chief Garcia echoed Sarcone’s sentiments: “Barajas’ actions pose a significant threat to our national security and community safety. The Swanton Sector Border Patrol is dedicated to dismantling criminal networks that exploit our immigration system, and we commend the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their crucial role in holding violators accountable.”
At his sentencing on December 23, 2025, Rodriguez Barajas faces a minimum sentence of 5 years and up to 15 years in prison. His sentence will be determined by a judge based on the specific charges and U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
This case was investigated by the Border Patrol, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Stitt prosecuting it.
