Miami Dade County has witnessed a grim conclusion as the last member of a notorious armed robbery ring, Andrew Nelson, 24, of Miami, was sentenced to an unprecedented 138 years in prison.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced the sentence, marking the culmination of a joint investigation by the ATF Miami Field Office, FBI Miami Field Office, and local law enforcement agencies. Nelson, who was convicted on January 17, 2017, faced charges including participating in a Hobbs Act robbery conspiracy, six counts of Hobbs Act robbery, and six counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
According to evidence presented at trial, the conspiracy began operating in Miami-Dade County as early as 2006. Nelson and his associates committed a series of armed robberies targeting civilians, businesses, banks, and even illegal enterprises such as drug traffickers. The gang was also involved in selling stolen narcotics.
Six co-conspirators, including Steven Stafford, 18, Anthony Stuckey, 19, Jarvis Robinson, 25, Leon Pearson, 27, Terril Kinchen, 25, and Torrence Lawton, 19, were also sentenced for their roles in the conspiracy. Their sentences ranged from 20 to 35 years.
Acting United States Attorney Benjamin C. Greenberg commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, highlighting the importance of these cases in dismantling organized crime. Assistant United States Attorneys Ignacio J. Vazquez, Jr., Brian Dobbins, and Cary Aronovitz prosecuted the case.
