Jean-Elguentino Cayo, Access Device Fraud, Florida 2013

Miami Gardens resident Jean-Elguentino Cayo, 26, has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for his role in a massive identity theft scheme. The sentence, handed down by the Southern District of Florida, also includes three years of supervised release.

Cayo pleaded guilty to one count of access device fraud under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1029(a)(2). Court documents reveal that between December 2012 and June 2013, Cayo sold around 400 names, dates of birth, and social security numbers without authorization. He traded this sensitive information for cash to a confidential informant and an undercover law enforcement officer.

Wifredo A. Ferrer, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, praised the investigative work of ICE-HSI and IRS-CI in bringing Cayo to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Maderal is handling the prosecution of this case.

This sentencing sends a strong message about the severity of identity theft and the commitment of federal agencies to protect citizens from such crimes.
