MIAMI, FL – In a stunning revelation from the Southern District of Florida, Mildrey Gonzalez, 61, and Milka Alfaro, 40, both residents of Miami, have each pleaded guilty to orchestrating a $20 million Medicare fraud scheme. The duo faced charges for their roles in running seven home health care agencies across Miami-Dade County, deceitfully billing the federal healthcare program for millions.
The U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer, Acting Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Blanco, and several special agents from the FBI, HHS-OIG, and USSS made the announcement of the guilty pleas. Sentencing is set for May 11th before Judge Jose E. Martinez.
Gonzalez and Alfaro admitted to owning and operating agencies such as Inar Home Care Service Corp., MA Home Health Inc., Golden Home Health Care Inc., Nova Home Health Care Inc., Finetech Home Health Inc., Homestead Home Health Care LLC, and Metro Dade Home Health Inc. They confessed to paying nominees to hide their ownership interests, issuing bribes to medical professionals for prescriptions, and patient recruiters for Medicare referrals.
The fraudulent scheme resulted in the overpayment of approximately $20 million by Medicare. Alongside Gonzalez and Alfaro, Adriana Jalil, 66, and Luis Luzardo, 48, were charged and have already been sentenced earlier this year for their involvement in the scheme.
Investigations into the case were conducted by the USSS, FBI, and HHS-OIG under the Medicare Fraud Strike Force. The Strike Force, established in March 2007, has since charged nearly 3,000 defendants billing over $11 billion to Medicare. Efforts are ongoing to enhance accountability within the healthcare system.
