Michael A. Connors, 36, of Ireland, Sentenced for Attempted Illegal Re-entry
ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a shocking turn of events, Michael A. Connors, a 36-year-old citizen of Ireland, was sentenced to time served (24 days in jail) for his role in the attempted illegal re-entry into the United States.
According to sources close to the investigation, Connors was arrested on June 24, 2017, at the Champlain Port of Entry as he attempted to enter the country from Canada by car. At the time, Connors did not have permission to return to the United States, having been previously removed to Ireland on June 15, 2011.
Connors’ guilty plea admitted that he is a citizen of Ireland and that he attempted to illegally return to the United States. This brazen move sparked a massive investigation by United States Customs and Border Protection, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent sentencing.
Following the sentencing, Connors was remanded to the custody of the Department of Homeland Security for removal proceedings. The case was investigated by United States Customs and Border Protection and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan.
Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Steven Bronson, United States Customs and Border Protection Port Director for the Champlain Port of Entry, made the announcement of Connors’ sentencing.
Connors’ actions have sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many to wonder how someone could so callously disregard the law. The investigation and subsequent sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating U.S. immigration laws.
In a statement, Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith said, ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the integrity of our borders and uphold the law.’
