Michael David Gregory, a 30-year-old man from Commerce, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 240 months in prison for the death of a two-month-old child and the assault of the child’s twin sister. The infants suffered severe head and eye injuries, which a child abuse pediatrician diagnosed as abusive head trauma.
U.S. District Judge Sara E. Hill handed down the sentence, which is followed by three years of supervised release. In addition to the prison time, Gregory was ordered to pay a $200 special monetary assessment. The twins’ mother was not present in the courtroom, but the family’s lawyer expressed their gratitude for the sentence.
The incident occurred at an apartment in Commerce, Oklahoma, which Gregory shared with his girlfriend. While she was at work, Gregory was left to care for the twins. According to his plea agreement, Gregory admitted to forcefully picking up and handling the newborns, resulting in the severe injuries.
The Commerce Police Department and the Quapaw Nation Marshal Service, in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melody Nelson prosecuted the case.
Gregory, who is not a member of a federally recognized tribe, was previously released on bond in this case. Judge Hill ordered him to report to a United States Bureau of Prisons facility on July 22, 2025. The twins’ death has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and many are relieved that justice has been served.
The sentencing marks the end of a long and difficult investigation into the tragic incident. The family’s lawyer expressed their hopes that the sentence will bring some closure to the family and help them heal from their loss.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson said, ‘Today’s sentence is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors who worked together to bring justice to the victims and their family.’
Gregory’s sentence is a significant blow to the community, but it also serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
