A convicted felon caught carrying a gun in Savannah’s mall will spend years behind bars after a federal sentencing in court.
Michael J. Harrison, 41, of Savannah, Alabama was sentenced to 60 months in prison for possessing a firearm by a convicted felon, which is a violation of federal law.
According to court documents, Harrison was found carrying a loaded handgun on January 1, 2022, during a security check at the Savannah Mall. A search of the area revealed the weapon, a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber handgun, which was reported stolen.
Harrison has a history of violent crime, including a 2019 conviction for attempted murder and a 2015 conviction for armed robbery.
Another defendant, Dewayne T. Holmes, 35, of Birmingham, Alabama was sentenced to 10 years in prison for firing shots in a neighborhood. Holmes was convicted of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Holmes fired multiple shots from a handgun into the air, causing a stampede of people to run for cover. No one was injured in the incident.
The sentences were handed down by U.S. District Judge R. Austin Huffaker Jr. in federal court in Birmingham, Alabama. The cases were prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Emily K. Thomas and Frank S. Sasser.
