Michael Jon Rohrick, Escape from Custody, Iowa 2021

Michael Jon Rohrick, a 35-year-old man from Waterloo, Iowa, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for his involvement in a brazen escape from a residential correctional facility in April 2020.

According to court documents, Rohrick signed out to go to work from the halfway house on April 10, 2020, but never returned. He was on the loose for several months before being apprehended in Waterloo following a high-speed chase.

The escape occurred on April 10, 2020, when Rohrick left the halfway house without authorization. He was on the run until his eventual capture, which marked the end of a months-long manhunt.

On February 1, 2021, Rohrick pleaded guilty to the charge of escape from custody. The plea came after weeks of negotiations between his legal team and prosecutors.

Rohrick’s sentencing was held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand. As part of his sentence, Rohrick was ordered to serve 24 months in federal prison and pay a fine of $100.

In addition to his prison term, Rohrick was also sentenced to a three-year term of supervised release after his release from prison. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Rohrick will serve his full sentence without the possibility of early release.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth Dupuich and investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Waterloo Police Department.
