Postal Employee Charged with Misappropriating Postal Funds in PA

A 57-year-old Somerset, Pa. resident, Michael Reich, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Johnstown on a charge of misappropriation of postal funds by a postal service employee, according to Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song.

According to the indictment, from May 18, 2016 to November 1, 2016, Reich unlawfully converted to his own use approximately $19,180, which had come into his possession or control as an employee of the United States Postal Service.

The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.

An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

This case is a reminder that the United States Postal Service takes allegations of employee misconduct seriously and will investigate and prosecute such cases to the fullest extent of the law.
