Windermere CEO Sentenced to 17 Years for Investment Scam
Michael Rivers, the 57-year-old CEO of Windermere-based Global Business Genesis, LLC (GBG), has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for his role in a massive investment fraud scheme.
According to court documents, Rivers and his wife, Kim, created GBG, an international bank software company, and used it as a front to swindle investors out of millions of dollars. They created forged documents, including attorney letters and insurance documents, to convince investors to part with their money.
Rivers was also ordered to pay restitution to his victims in the amount of $1,160,284 and forfeit more than $300,000 in proceeds obtained from the fraud, as well as three luxury vehicles.
The scheme, which was uncovered by the United States Secret Service, involved Rivers and his wife creating an elaborate web of lies to convince investors that GBG was a legitimate business. They even went so far as to create fake documents showing that Rivers had debilitating cancer and was receiving treatment in Argentina.
On August 14, 2014, Judge Paul G. Byron sentenced Kim Rivers to six years in federal prison and ordered her to pay restitution to the victims in the same amount.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Christopher LaForgia, Daniel Irick, and Nicole Andrejko.
Rivers pleaded guilty in March 2014 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft.
