Columbus Man Pleads Guilty to Coercing Minor Girls on Social Media

Columbus, Ohio – A 21-year-old Columbus man has pleaded guilty to four crimes related to the sexual exploitation of minors. Michael T. Sutherin agreed to plead guilty to two counts of coercing a minor and two counts of receiving child pornography.

According to court documents, Sutherin met minor females through various social media platforms, including Instagram, Snapchat, Kik, and Telegram. He coerced at least four 12 to 15-year-old girls into engaging in sexual activities on video.

A forensic examination of Sutherin’s phone and laptop confirmed that he had used social media to solicit minor girls for sexually explicit videos and images of themselves. The review of Sutherin’s conversations with the girls revealed that he instructed the minors to call him ‘daddy.’

The parties involved in this case have recommended a prison sentence of 12 years. The plea was offered today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Norah McCann King.

David M. DeVillers, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, and Chris Hoffman, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Cincinnati Division, announced the plea offered today. Assistant United States Attorneys Heather A. Hill and S. Courter Shimeall are representing the United States in this case.

The case is a disturbing reminder of the dangers of online predators and the importance of protecting our children from exploitation. The community must come together to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
