A Dumfries man is behind bars for decades after selling fentanyl-laced cocaine that triggered six overdoses at a Fairfax County apartment party — one victim dead, five barely saved by Narcan. Michael Vaughn, 28, was sentenced today to 30 years in prison on federal charges of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death and serious bodily injury, along with possession with intent to distribute.
The incident unfolded on September 21, 2021, when Vaughn handed out what he claimed was cocaine at a gathering in the Skyline neighborhood of Fairfax County. Six people ingested the substance. All six collapsed. All six were rushed to hospitals. Five were revived with emergency doses of Narcan. The sixth never woke up — a confirmed fentanyl fatality. Court evidence proved Vaughn knowingly mixed fentanyl into the cocaine, turning a party into a near-mass casualty event.
Less than a month later, on October 20, 2021, law enforcement moved in. At Vaughn’s residence in Prince William County, agents found approximately 60 additional grams of pure fentanyl powder — a lethal cache with the potential to kill hundreds. The discovery confirmed prosecutors’ claims: this wasn’t a one-time mix; it was a calculated, deadly trafficking operation.
U.S. District Judge Rossie D. Alston handed down the 30-year sentence in Alexandria federal court, calling the crime a reckless assault on human life. Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said the sentence sends a message: dealers who flood communities with synthetic opioids will face the full weight of federal law.
The DEA and Fairfax County Police led the investigation, with critical support from Prince William County Police. Jarod Forget, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Washington Division, emphasized that fentanyl dealers aren’t just criminals — they’re murderers. “When you sell fentanyl, you’re not just breaking the law — you’re playing Russian roulette with strangers’ lives,” Forget said.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachael C. Tucker and Michael P. Ben’Ary prosecuted the case. Court records, including Case No. 1:21-cr-261, are available through the Eastern District of Virginia’s public docket on PACER. The U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a full press release on its website, underscoring the federal crackdown on fentanyl networks feeding suburban and urban overdose crises alike.
