A Dumfries man responsible for one of Northern Virginia’s most devastating drug incidents in recent years has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. Michael Vaughn, 28, was convicted of distributing fentanyl-laced cocaine that led to one death and five near-fatal overdoses at a party in Fairfax County’s Skyline neighborhood.
The carnage unfolded on September 21, 2021, when Vaughn handed out what appeared to be cocaine to six individuals at a crowded apartment gathering. Within minutes, all six collapsed from opioid toxicity. Emergency crews scrambled to revive them with Narcan — five survived. The sixth, whose identity has not been publicly released, died with fentanyl metabolites flooding his system.
Court documents reveal Vaughn didn’t just sell tainted drugs — he knowingly weaponized them. Prosecutors proved at trial that he intentionally mixed fentanyl into the cocaine, dramatically increasing its lethality. His motive: stretch supply, boost potency, and rake in more cash. The DEA called it a textbook case of reckless disregard for human life.
When law enforcement raided his Prince William County residence on October 20, 2021, they found the smoking gun — approximately 60 additional grams of pure fentanyl powder. That stash represented hundreds, possibly thousands, of lethal doses ready for distribution. The discovery confirmed what investigators feared: this wasn’t a one-time slip, but part of an ongoing, deadly operation.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Rossie D. Alston in Alexandria. Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, condemned Vaughn’s actions as ‘profiteering from poison.’ The DEA’s Washington Division, led by Special Agent in Charge Jarod Forget, and the Fairfax County Police Department, under Chief Kevin Davis, spearheaded the investigation, with critical support from Prince William County Police.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachael C. Tucker and Michael P. Ben’Ary prosecuted the case.
