Priest Sentenced to Life for Sex Trafficking in Northern Ohio
TOLEDO, Ohio – In a shocking case of abuse of trust, Michael Zacharias, a 56-year-old former priest from Findlay, Ohio, has been sentenced to life in prison for sex trafficking three victims in Northern Ohio.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Zacharias, who was a priest-in-training when he first met the victims at a Catholic school in Toledo in 1999, used his position of authority as a spiritual leader to groom the boys and grow close with their families before ultimately coercing the victims into engaging in commercial sex acts.
The victims, who were still minors at the time, were exploited by Zacharias who used their opioid addictions to cope with the trauma of the abuse. Two of the victims were still minors at the time, while the third was an adult who had struggled with addiction throughout his life.
U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary handed down the life sentence, which also includes 5 years of supervised release, a $500 special assessment, and a payment of $25,000 pursuant to the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.
“Michael Zacharias’s victims trusted him, as a spiritual advisor, a confidant, a community leader, and someone in a position of authority. He exploited his position and that trust to target and victimize young boys and their families, causing lasting damage to both,” said U.S. Attorney Rebecca C. Lutzko.
The FBI Cleveland Field Office, Lima and Toledo Resident Agencies investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Ballard Tangeman prosecuted the case.
Zacharias’s betrayal of trust is a stark reminder of the dangers of abuse in positions of authority. His victims suffered serious psychological harm, and their lives were forever changed by his actions.
The life sentence handed down to Zacharias is a significant step towards finding justice and protecting our community. It sends a message to others who consider similar conduct that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will aggressively pursue charges against those who target our children.
