Michigan Man Charged for Child Sex Trafficking

A 42-year-old man from Michigan has been charged with child sex trafficking after he traveled to Wisconsin to meet a 15-year-old girl for sex. Scott D. Sundberg, of Ishpeming, Michigan, was arrested on August 13, 2021, by local and federal authorities in Milwaukee.

According to a criminal complaint, Sundberg began exchanging instant messages with an individual he believed to be the parent of the 15-year-old girl living in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The complaint alleged that Sundberg expressed repeated interest in engaging in sexual activity with the 15-year-old and also sent pornographic images of children engaged in explicit sexual activity.

Sundberg was communicating with a law enforcement agent working as part of Operation Kick Boxer, a collaborative effort involving the Milwaukee Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.

The indictment alleges that Sundberg used a computer to attempt to persuade, induce, or entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2422(b). If convicted, Sundberg faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to a lifetime of imprisonment.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
