Michigan Man Charged in Federal Employee Assault

A 46-year-old man from Fenton, Michigan, has been indicted for allegedly assaulting a federal employee in the Eastern District of Michigan, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

Ronnie Edward Duke is facing charges for forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, and interfering with an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan on February 24, 2014.

The investigation into the assault was handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, due to the recusal of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Marshals Service also assisted in the investigation.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Matthew B. Kall and Thomas P. Weldon.

An indictment is only a charge, and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial, in which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

If convicted, Duke’s sentence will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to the case, including his prior criminal record, his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.

According to Dettelbach, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.

Duke is expected to face justice in a federal court, where the full weight of the law will be applied.
