Michigan Man Sentenced for Lacey Act Violations

A 46-year-old Holland, Michigan man has been sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation after pleading guilty to Lacey Act violations.

According to federal prosecutors, Donald Israels knowingly transported, sold, received, and acquired two white-tailed deer in interstate commerce from South Dakota to Michigan in 2010 and 2011. The charges stem from two incidents in which Israels did not have a hunting license for the deer he killed.

Israels, 46, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge John E. Simko on June 17, 2013, and pleaded guilty to Counts I and II of the Information filed April 4, 2013.

As part of his sentence, Israels was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine, $2,000 in restitution, and a $50 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.

The Lacey Act is a federal law that prohibits the unauthorized sale, purchase, or transportation of wildlife in interstate commerce.

Israels’ sentencing marks the conclusion of a multi-year investigation into wildlife crimes in the region.
