Mikael Rivera, 47, Pleads Guilty to Sex Abuse of Inmates in Hawaii
A disturbing case of abuse of power has come to light in Hawaii, where a former prison guard has pleaded guilty to committing multiple sexual acts with inmates under his supervision. Mikael Rivera, 47, of Kapolei, was a correctional officer at the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu from approximately 2014 to 2018.
According to court documents, Rivera committed multiple sexual acts with one inmate who did not consent and engaged in sexually abusive conduct with two additional inmates under his supervision. This egregious abuse of power has left many wondering how such a heinous crime could occur under the watchful eyes of prison authorities.
The case against Rivera has been investigated by the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General, with assistance from the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Ayabe and Trial Attorney Nicole Lockhart of the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section are prosecuting the case.
Rivera pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual abuse of a ward, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison on each count. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 3, and a federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in our correctional facilities and the importance of protecting the rights of inmates. It also highlights the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions.
The public has a right to know about such crimes and to demand justice for the victims. As a society, we must work to create a culture that values the dignity and well-being of all individuals, particularly those who are incarcerated.
