Fentanyl Trafficking Bust Rocks Minneapolis
A Minneapolis man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, announced Acting U.S. Attorney W. Anders Folk.
According to court documents, on June 1, 2019, officers with the Minneapolis Police seized 351 counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl from Fowzi Abdinasir Elmi, 19. The pills had a potential street value of thousands of dollars.
Elmi, 19, was not content with local sales and had bigger plans. On January 21, 2020, he and two other individuals drove to Arizona with the intent of buying fentanyl pills and then returning to Minnesota to distribute them. Elmi successfully purchased the pills but was stopped by law enforcement in Oklahoma. Approximately 2,100 counterfeit prescription fentanyl pills were seized from Elmi.
The fentanyl pills were being sold for a tidy profit. Elmi admitted to purchasing the pills for $15 per pill and selling them for $30-$35 per pill, making a neat profit of $15-$20 per pill.
Elmi’s fentanyl trafficking operation came to an end on September 15, 2020, when he was involved in a single vehicle car crash. When Minneapolis police officers arrived, they found Elmi in possession of 170 counterfeit prescription fentanyl pills.
This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Minneapolis Police Department, and the State of Oklahoma District One Narcotics Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys David P. Steinkamp and Justin A. Wesley are prosecuting the case.
Elmi’s guilty plea is a significant blow to the fentanyl trafficking operation in Minneapolis. The investigation and subsequent prosecution are a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in the region.
