Minnesota Woman Fails to Pay Child Support, Faces 5 Years Probation

A 29-year-old woman from Garden City, Minnesota, has been sentenced to 5 years of unsupervised probation and a hefty sum in restitution for her failure to pay child support, as well as 1 year of unsupervised probation for failing to appear in court.

According to officials, Jessica Lynn Voss was ordered by the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court, Roberts County, South Dakota, to pay $350.00 per month in child support for her minor children, commencing December 1, 2007. However, at the time of her indictment in October 2012, she had not made a child support payment since August of 2009.

Voss was indicted by a federal grand jury for failing to pay over $19,000 in past due child support. She initially appeared in federal court in South Dakota on bond, but failed to appear at her change of plea hearing scheduled for May 28, 2013, prompting a warrant to be issued for her failure to appear.

Voss eventually pled guilty to the child support charge on August 5, 2013, and to the failure to appear charge on November 4, 2013. As a result, she was sentenced to 5 years of unsupervised probation, a $100.00 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $23,812.78. She was also sentenced to imprisonment of time served, 1 year of unsupervised probation, and a $100.00 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for her failure to appear.

The case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright prosecuting the case. Voss was released from custody following her sentencing.

A total of $23,812.78 in child support restitution was ordered paid by Jessica Lynn Voss, a 29-year-old woman from Garden City, Minnesota, as part of her sentence for failure to pay child support and failure to appear in court. The restitution amount includes the $350.00 monthly payments Voss was ordered to pay for her minor children, commencing December 1, 2007, minus the $19,000 in past due payments she failed to make since August 2009.

Wright. Voss’s failure to pay child support and her subsequent failure to appear in court have resulted in a lengthy and costly sentence, including 5 years of unsupervised probation and time served in prison.
