ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – A devastating crash on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County, New Mexico, resulted in the loss of one life and serious injuries to another.
According to court documents, Miranda Rentz, a 41-year-old enrolled member of the Navajo Nation from Red Valley, Arizona, was behind the wheel of her vehicle when she crashed head-on into another vehicle on January 17, 2015. The accident was exacerbated by Rentz’s decision to drive under the influence of alcohol.
Rentz was arrested on January 2015 and subsequently indicted on February 25, 2015 for involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
On January 20, 2016, Rentz pleaded guilty to the indictment and admitted to causing the fatal crash while driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol. Her reckless actions imperiled the lives of others, resulting in the loss of one life and serious injuries to another.
The investigation into the crash was conducted by the Farmington office of the FBI and the Shiprock office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle T. Nayback.
Rentz will serve an 84-month prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release.
