Mission Man Charged With Child Abuse

A 42-year-old Mission, South Dakota man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Child Abuse and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

According to the indictment, Gilbert Young, 42, allegedly assaulted a child under 7 years of age on February 16, 2013, in Mission, resulting in serious bodily injury. Young appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 29, 2014, and pled not guilty to the Indictment.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to life in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers is prosecuting the case.

Young was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The charges are merely accusations, and Young is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
