Scott Young, Meth Distribution, Illinois 2019

A Missouri man, Scott Young, 37, from Chillicothe, has been handed a 60-month prison sentence for distributing methamphetamine in Illinois.

Young was sentenced on April 25, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Colleen R. Lawless, after being found guilty of distributing the highly addictive substance on two occasions in Adams County, Illinois in 2019.

The conviction comes after Young was indicted in December 2019 and pleaded guilty in September 2023. According to court records, Young’s distribution of methamphetamine has had devastating effects on communities in the Central District of Illinois.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Z. Weir represented the government in the prosecution, which was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Illinois State Police, and Quincy Police Department. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence.

The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) brings together law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The program was launched on May 26, 2021, with the goal of making neighborhoods safer for everyone.

The statutory penalties for distributing methamphetamine are severe, with a maximum sentence of 40 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $5,000,000, and up to a life term of supervised release. Young’s 60-month sentence is a fraction of the maximum punishment he could have faced.

The case against Young serves as a warning to those involved in the distribution of illicit substances. As the DOJ continues to crack down on crime, it’s clear that those who engage in such activities will face the full force of the law.
