Keith Taylor, Charity and Tax Evasion, NY 2024

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: KEITH TAYLOR, the founder and former CEO of Modest Needs Foundation, has pleaded guilty to multimillion-dollar charity fraud and tax evasion. The Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton announced that Taylor admitted to siphoning off millions in donations meant for struggling families, using the money for personal luxuries such as rent in a Manhattan luxury apartment and meals at upscale restaurants.

Taylor faces up to 30 years in prison after embezzling over $2.5 million from Modest Needs between 2015 and his arrest last June. He continued to misuse charity funds even after his resignation, violating the terms of his pretrial release.

The investigation revealed that Taylor used charity funds for lavish dining at New York City’s finest eateries, paying over $320,000 at restaurants like Per Se and Jean-Georges. Additionally, he funneled more than $300,000 into his personal brokerage account, paid his rent on a 30th-floor Manhattan skyscraper, and spent over $100,000 on food delivery services.

Despite the charity’s mission to assist low-income families in crisis, Taylor concealed his embezzlement by fabricating a fake board of directors. He used acquaintances’ names, including a bartender from Jean-Georges, as board members without their knowledge or consent.

Taylor also evaded over $1 million in federal income taxes by not filing personal income tax returns for the years 2017 through 2024, receiving millions from Modest Needs.

The sentencing is set for January 20, 2026. U.S. Attorney Clayton emphasized the importance of justice for those who exploit charitable trust: “Keith Taylor preyed on the generosity of New Yorkers, using charity funds for personal gain. He must be held accountable.”
