U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced on September 4, 2025, that two Modesto residents and one from Bakersfield have been indicted for their roles in the illegal drug trade.

Manuel Rodriguez Diaz, 41, of Modesto, is accused of transporting a staggering 27.65 kilograms (61 pounds) of cocaine on July 10, 2025. The drugs were seized during a traffic stop on California State Road 99 in Madera County. Diaz faces a minimum sentence of ten years and a maximum of life imprisonment, along with a $10 million fine.

In Bakersfield, Steven Paul Garcia, 53, was charged with possessing more than 500 grams of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Deputies seized approximately 22 pounds of the drug during a traffic stop on August 26, 2025. Garcia also faces a minimum sentence of ten years and a maximum of life imprisonment, along with a $10 million fine.

Twenty-year-old Thomas Carter Beasley from Fresno was caught with a loaded Glock 27 .40-caliber pistol while on probation for a prior felony conviction. The firearm was discovered hidden under a doormat in an apartment complex after a high-speed chase. Beasley faces a maximum sentence of fifteen years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

All three cases are part of Operation Take Back America, which leverages the Department of Justice’s full resources to combat illegal immigration, eliminate cartels, and protect communities from violent crime. The initiative brings together law enforcement agencies and communities across the country.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cody S. Chapple and Robert Veneman-Hughes are prosecuting the cases against Diaz, Garcia, and Beasley. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
