Javen James Pedro, Fentanyl Distribution, Oregon 2022

A Monmouth, Oregon man has been sentenced to federal prison for distributing fentanyl that caused the overdose death of a teenager in Salem, Oregon.

Javen James Pedro, 21, was sentenced to 75 months in federal prison and six years’ supervised release by a federal judge.

The overdose occurred on February 24, 2022, when officers from the Salem Police Department responded to an emergency call. A 15-year-old teenager was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Further investigation revealed that the minor victim had purchased and consumed counterfeit Oxycodone pills containing fentanyl in front of several other juveniles on February 23, 2022. Investigators obtained video surveillance footage from a neighbor showing the minor victim completing what appeared to be a drug transaction with Pedro.

Pedro admitted to selling ten counterfeit Oxycodone pills to the minor victim the day prior, and stated he had sold pills to the minor victim approximately five to ten times previously.

Pedro was initially charged by criminal complaint with distributing fentanyl on February 24, 2022, and later indicted by a federal grand jury in Portland on March 17, 2022.

On February 6, 2024, Pedro pleaded guilty to a one-count superseding criminal information charging him with distributing a controlled substance to a person under the age of 21.

This case was investigated by the Salem Police Department with the assistance of federal authorities.

The case was prosecuted by Scott M. Kerin, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

The harsh sentence handed down to Pedro is a reminder of the severe consequences of distributing deadly fentanyl to vulnerable individuals.
