MONROE, La. — In a harsh blow against the drug trade in Ouachita Parish, Devin S. McMillian, 27, from Monroe, was handed a 10-year prison sentence for distributing methamphetamine.
The sentence was pronounced by U.S. District Judge S. Maurice Hicks Jr. on Wednesday following McMillian’s guilty plea to one count of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. Alongside the stiff term, McMillian faces five years of supervised release upon his release from prison.
McMillian’s downfall began when Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s deputies stopped him during a traffic stop on February 16, 2017. Inside the vehicle he was driving, they discovered 23 grams of methamphetamine. The investigation took an unexpected turn after McMillian made a call from prison, instructing a friend to retrieve items from his residence. Deputies overheard the conversation and acted swiftly, uncovering 754.9 grams of methamphetamine and one gram of marijuana at the scene.
The case was a collaborative effort between the DEA and the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office Special Crimes Apprehension Team. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany E. Fields was responsible for prosecution.
McMillian’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the severe penalties associated with methamphetamine distribution in Louisiana, where law enforcement is tirelessly working to combat drug-related crime.
