Monroe, GA – In a brutal blow to the illegal prescription drug trade in Georgia, Joshua Smith, 29, of Monroe, was sentenced to more than twelve years (151 months) in federal prison for his role as an oxycodone dealer. The sentence was handed down by Chief U.S. District Court Judge C. Ashley Royal on February 25, 2014.
Smith pleaded guilty on September 9, 2013, admitting to selling Roxicodone tablets to an undercover detective on July 12, 2012. He further confessed to similar drug transactions with the same detective, a significant blow in the ongoing battle against prescription drug abuse in the Middle District of Georgia.
“Unfortunately, the Middle District of Georgia is not immune from the scourge of illegal prescription drug distribution,” stated U.S. Attorney Michael Moore. “At least we can take some comfort in knowing that for the next 12 years, Mr. Smith won’t be peddling his pills on our streets or in our neighborhoods.”
The investigation into Smith’s activities was led by the City of Monroe Police Department, while Assistant United States Attorney Danial E. Bennett prosecuted the case. Moore expressed hope that this sentence sends a clear message to those who seek to profit from the illegal drug trade.
