A federal grand jury has indicted Rodney A. Stevens, a 38-year-old man from Missoula, Montana, for his alleged failure to pay over $27,942 in past due child support.
According to the indictment, Stevens, who appeared before US Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on February 8, 2013, pled not guilty to the charge of Failure to Pay Legal Child Support.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is two years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, one year supervised release, one additional year upon revocation, a $100 assessment fee, and child support restitution amount owing at the time of sentencing.
The investigation is being conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Wright is prosecuting the case.
Stevens was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The charge is merely an accusation, and Stevens is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson made the announcement, highlighting the importance of upholding the law and ensuring that those who fail to meet their child support obligations are held accountable.
