United States Attorney Beth Drake announced today that Shane Douglas Sichting, Jr., a 48-year-old Montana native serving out a ten-year sentence in Federal Correctional Institute, Edgefield, has been sentenced to an additional 135 months for attempting to hire a hitman to kill his former wife. The sentencing was handed down by United States District Judge Bruce Howe Hendricks of Charleston.
Sichting pleaded guilty on September 1, 2016, to charges of using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder for hire and retaliating against an informant, violations of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1958(a) and 1513(a)(1).
In 2007, Sichting had been convicted of attempting to hire a hitman for his wife, a crime he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for. His latest attempt came while serving the remainder of his sentence at FCI, Edgefield, where he approached another inmate about carrying out the murders before his planned release in January 2016.
Upon discovering Sichting’s intentions, the inmate alerted the FBI, who devised a plan to lead Sichting into an undercover operation. Through phone calls and mail correspondence, the ‘hitman,’ actually an FBI employee, was provided with confidential information on the victims using coded language to refer to them as car makes.
This case was investigated by agents of the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons, with Assistant United States Attorney Jeanne Howard handling the prosecution. Sichting’s second attempt at hiring a hitman for his ex-wife has resulted in an additional 135 months behind bars.
