Local Man Convicted of Fentanyl Trafficking

A Providence man has been found guilty of selling fentanyl in the city. According to authorities, Montrell Dennis, 34, was arrested on May 3, 2025, after a lengthy investigation by the FBI Rhode Island Safe Streets Gang Task Force.

On Tuesday, Dennis pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. The court had authorized a search of Dennis’ Providence residence on May 3, 2024, where authorities discovered several plastic baggies containing fentanyl and other drugs.

According to toxicology reports, the seized narcotics contained 29.4 grams of a mixture including Fentanyl, Heroin, Cocaine, and Xylazine, as well as 1.37 grams of crack cocaine. In addition to the illicit substances, authorities also seized multiple digital scales, multiple smartphones, and two firearms.

Dennis has been detained since his arrest in May 2025. His sentencing is scheduled for April 22, 2025, at which point a federal district judge will determine his sentence based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Taylor A. Dean. The matter was investigated by the FBI Rhode Island Safe Streets Gang Task Force.

Dennis’ conviction serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against fentanyl trafficking in our community. We will continue to work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice and keep our streets safe.

In a related note, the Providence Police Department has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the city.

The initiative includes increased patrols and outreach efforts to educate the public about the dangers of fentanyl. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
