A staged bank robbery in Bethalto, Illinois has led to a guilty plea from a Moro man. Eugene Babcock, 58, of Moro, IL, pled guilty today in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois to charges stemming from a staged bank robbery at Liberty Bank in Bethalto, Illinois, that occurred on December 13, 2014.
Babcock, who was engaged by the bank’s manager to assist in the staged robbery, was caught by police after returning over $100,000 taken from the fake bank robbery to investigators.
The bank’s manager, who engaged Babcock in the staged robbery, is not named in the guilty plea. However, it is alleged that the manager had planned the staged robbery in order to share in the stolen funds.
The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Bethalto Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Laura Reppert is assigned to the case.
Babcock faces a term of imprisonment of not more than ten years, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of not more than three years at sentencing, which is scheduled for September 15, 2015, at 9 a.m.
While Babcock’s accomplice in the staged bank robbery remains at large, Babcock has taken responsibility for his actions and has agreed to cooperate with investigators.
Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced Babcock’s guilty plea today, stating that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to bring those responsible for white-collar crimes to justice.
